ESD protection component for mobile portable device NFC antenna

The integration of NFC and mobile phones to provide consumers with proximity sensing payment transactions is now widely discussed and implemented. However, when everyone is eager to discuss and implement various NFC integration and implementation methods, one of the effects that cannot be ignored is the erroneous action caused by the impact of electrostatic discharge (ESD) on the entire NFC communication function through the NFC antenna. Mobile phones and other electronic products are easily exposed to ESD due to their frequent contact with the human body. In addition, most of the ICs used in these electronic products use the most advanced semiconductor process technology. The gate oxide layer of the components used is very thin and the junction is very shallow, which is easy to be damaged by the impact of ESD. Therefore, these electronic products require additional ESD protection components to avoid system crashes caused by ESD shocks and even hardware damage. NFC antennas are the first step that must be protected by ESD protection components.

The ESD protection components used in portable electronic products such as mobile phones must meet the following requirements:

First, in order to meet the needs of such electronic products that are light, thin, compact, and easy to carry, the size of ESD protection components must be small enough, such as 0402 package size, even 0201 package size, to achieve both high integration and high flexibility in PCB design Sexual advantage.

Second, the parasitic capacitance of the ESD protection component connected to the body must be small to avoid signal interference. For example, the ESD protection component used in the antenna must consider the frequency band used by the antenna, and the minimum acceptable parasitic capacitance value in different frequency bands. The parasitic capacitance value of the ESD protection component usually used in the antenna must be less than 1pF or even lower.

Third, the selection of the maximum working voltage and unidirectional or bidirectional characteristics applicable to ESD protection components must consider the maximum and minimum voltages of the signal swinging up and down to avoid the signal being affected. For example, for the antenna used in mobile phones, the highest signal voltage usually exceeds 10V and the lowest voltage is lower than 0V. A bidirectional ESD protection component suitable for this signal voltage must be selected; for antennas used in GPS, the highest voltage is usually less than 5V and the lowest voltage does not Below 0V, 5V unidirectional ESD protection components can be used.

Fourth, the ESD protection component itself must have a high tolerance to ESD events, at least to withstand the 8kV ESD attack in IEC 61000-4-2 contact mode.

Fifth, and most important, the clamping voltage provided by the ESD protection component during the ESD event must be sufficiently low, in addition to providing the protected circuit from the permanent damage caused by the impact of electrostatic discharge, but also to ensure the signal The transmission will not be disturbed by ESD.

AZ4217-01F protection components for NFC applications

For these portable electronic products, the design of ESD protection components needs to meet all the above requirements at the same time, and the difficulty becomes very high.
